Poem of the Day 7/4/11

Today's poem of the day is by a poet named Lynn Powell. It's from her collecton of poetry called Old & New Testaments. Here is what her bio says in the book: "Lynn Powell was raised in East Tennessee and educated at Carson-Newman College and Cornell University. She has worked extensively as a writer in the schools for the Tennessee Arts Commission, the New Jersey State Council for the Arts, the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, and currently, the Ohio Arts Council. Her poems have appeared in The Paris Review, Poetry, The Gettysburg Review, and other journals. She lives in Oberlin, Ohio."
Ok, so here's her poem:

In The Garden

Some perennial herbs spread rapidly by
underground roots and quickly take over garden
space. A few of the worst offenders are
catnip, mint, and oregano.
---Burpee's Seed Catalog

What but a wall of brick
sunk three feet deep into the garden
could keep the oregano home
from the lavender,
curb the evangelical mint?

He speaks of his marriage
and I lean toward his mouth,
delicate as herbs we bruise
for fragrance.

By Lynn Powell

Hope you enjoyed that as much as I did!

Today's Playlist 7/4/11

Hello Dear Readers,

It's the Fourth of July and I just read the first chapter of "Pagan Meditations" by Ginette Paris for my Mythology class. I have to write a draft of the final paper by tomorrow at 4 and I just removed the shrink wrap from the book. But, since your Fourth of July (hopefully) does not involve a date with mythology, I'll give you a playlist to make your Fourth complete!!!

1.  "I Get A Rush" by Bon Jovi
2. "Firework" by Katy Perry
3. "On Top of the World" by Boys Like Girls
4. "Sailed Away" by Saving Abel

6. "I Want Candy" by Aaron Carter
7. "Next Go Round" by Nickelback
8. "Fergalicious" by Fergie

10. "Boom Boom Pow" by The Black Eyed Peas
11. "London Beckoned Songs About Money Written By Machines" by Panic! At the Disco

Happy 4th!!!!

Hello All,

Well, It's officially July! And Happy Independence Day!!!! In honor of the new month, I've changed my picture. And, also, are you ready for your Fourth of July Playlist? How About a Fourth of July Wish-List? How About the Fourth of July homework list?---ok, maybe I won't post that one. It's a bit depressing. Instead of fireworks and barbeque I'm sitting here with poetry books and writing mythology essays and studying for an oral interview I must conduct entirely while speaking Spanish!!! I thought finals week was bad before, but it doesn't compare to finals week during summer semesters!

Anyway, I'll be posting those lists as soon as I get a chance, but for now I'm off to read "Old & New Testament" by Lynn Powell for my poetry essay...

Wish me luck!
